What is SEO? A plain-English guide for small businesses
SEO (search engine optimisation) sounds technical, but the idea is simple: help Google understand what you do and where you do it, so it can show you to people searching for it.
What Google is trying to do
Google wants to show the most useful result for each search. If someone searches "gel nails Umhlanga", it looks for pages that clearly offer gel nails, in or near Umhlanga, that people seem to find helpful.
The basics that matter most
- Clear pages for each service. One page per main service, with the service and area in the heading.
- Words your customers use. If they search "braids", don't only say "protective styling".
- A fast, mobile-friendly site. Slow sites lose visitors and rankings.
- Your Google Business Profile. Essential for local searches.
- Useful content. Answering common questions, like this blog does, gives Google more reasons to show you.
What doesn't work
Stuffing keywords into every sentence, buying links from strangers, or copying content from other sites. These can do more harm than good.
